02 - Umbú (2006)

02 - Umbú - A3 Canson - 42 x 29,7 cm - Nanquim sobre papel / Nankin on paper (2006)

Symbol of hospitality tree, in Tupi-Guarani "y-mb-u", which means "good spirits" that graces the landscapes of Southern Brazil, offering friendly shade and hospitality, in fields and grassy hills.

There are historical Umbus, in whose shadows have already been discussed relevant issues of importance. In the shade of its branches have sheltered themselves warriors. First those who defended the country against foreigners, after the gaucho monarchist in defense of his monarch against Imperial and finally, the children in the defense of these ideals that led them to a better fate. Everybody have been dying, but Umbu is still there. In its shadow play children as old people shelter themselves from the heat of the sun ... and it still remains there, happy and strong! No matter how longer the drought takes, the greener it gets. No matter how hard the winter is, it flourishes itself.

As the legend says, in the childhood of times, the trees were all alike, but one day God was very pleased, the devils and evil men had been defeated so decided to celebrate satisfying the desire of the trees. Everyone wanted to be beautiful and strong. When he came to the umbu, he said that he wanted to have a very weak body and useless wood, but wanted to be large, to shade and shelter men. God fulfilled his desire, but curious, asked why he wanted to become a wood so weak and soft, while all other trees wanted to be strong and hard. So Umbu explained that he did not want the timber might serve some day to cross and the sacrifice of a saint. And since then, the Umbu is like that...
